Prithvi Shaw is set to represent Maharashtra for the first time following his high-profile domestic team switch. After a couple of turbulent years, this move offers him an opportunity to reset his career. His first assignment will be the All India Buchi Babu Invitational tournament in Chennai later this month.

Shaw leads Maharashtra after being dropped from Mumbai due to disciplinary issues and fitness concerns—challenges that have long hindered the talented batter. He now looks to make a strong impression in a new environment.

Joining Shaw in the Maharashtra squad is Ruturaj Gaikwad, returning from his own injury layoff. The pair could form a formidable opening combination, although Gaikwad is expected to play only in Maharashtra’s tournament opener before joining West Zone for the Duleep Trophy.

Additionally, wicketkeeper Saurabh Nawale will travel to Bengaluru for the Duleep Trophy. Maharashtra will be captained by Ankit Bawne, who, along with the coaching staff, will be looking for renewed drive and intensity from Shaw in his fresh start.

Maharashtra aim for strong Buchi Babu showing

Prithvi Shaw, the former Mumbai batter, is looking for a career reset after going unsold in the 2025 IPL auction—a low point that affected his confidence across international, domestic, and franchise cricket. Despite a promising debut for India and strong performances for Delhi Capitals, off-field issues have repeatedly hampered his progress.

Maharashtra’s group in the innovative Buchi Babu Invitational includes Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, and the TNCA President’s XI. The team kicks off their campaign against Chhattisgarh at Gurunanak College, where Shaw will aim to make an immediate impact and signal his readiness for a strong comeback.

Meanwhile, teenage sensation Ayush Mhatre continues to rise in domestic cricket, particularly in Mumbai. The current India U-19 captain has also been entrusted with senior domestic captaincy for this tournament, leading a Mumbai side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane. Mhatre’s squad features notable players such as Sarfaraz Khan and his brother Musheer, highlighting the blend of youth and experience.
