Shubman Gill’s brilliant 269 runs powered India to a commanding total of 587 in their first innings of the Edgbaston Test. On Thursday, July 2, at Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham, Gill continued his remarkable run as captain during the second Test of the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy by scoring a majestic double century.
Having made an impressive 147 on his captaincy debut at Leeds, Gill surpassed all expectations in just his second match leading India in Test cricket. Not only did he achieve his highest-ever score in the format, but he also recorded his maiden double century.
During his innings, Gill struck 30 fours and three sixes, forging crucial partnerships — a 203-run stand for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (89) and a 144-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Washington Sundar (42).
Shubman Gill surpasses Rohit Sharma’s record with his impressive innings.

Following legends like Rohit Sharma, Chris Gayle, Virender Sehwag, and Sachin Tendulkar, the Indian captain becomes only the fifth player ever to achieve the rare feat of scoring a double century in both Test and ODI formats. Gill is the only player to achieve this remarkable milestone before turning thirty, making him the youngest ever to do so in both formats
Age of Players When They Scored Double Centuries in Both Test and ODI Formats

Shubman Gill etched his name in history by becoming the first Asian captain to score a Test double century in SENA countries. The previous record for the highest score by an Asian captain in these conditions belonged to Tillakaratne Dilshan, who scored 193 for Sri Lanka at Lord’s in 2011.
Gill also became the youngest Indian to register a Test double hundred on English soil. Among Indian captains, only Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi achieved the milestone at a younger age while leading the side.
