As his ODI comeback approaches, Rohit Sharma has sent a strong message to head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, emphasizing his readiness and determination to perform for India.
Rohit Sharma Gears Up for ODI Return Against Australia

India ODI captain Rohit Sharma is leaving no stone unturned ahead of the three-match series against Australia, starting October 19 at Perth’s Optus Stadium. The 38-year-old will play his first international match in almost eight months, following his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year. While Rohit has insisted he isn’t leaving ODIs after the Champions Trophy 2025 win, questions about his international future continue to swirl.
Reports suggest that Rohit and Virat Kohli might play their final ODI series in Australia, with the possibility of participating in the Vijay Hazare Trophy if they aim to represent India in the 2027 World Cup across South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Having endured heartbreak in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia, Rohit is motivated to make another push for ICC glory before considering retirement.
Though the final decision rests with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir, Rohit is focusing on what he can control. Currently training in Mumbai with close friend and former assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, he shared a glimpse of his net session on Instagram, captioning it: “That felt good,” adding, “I am here again. It feels really good.”
Will Rohit play India A matches?

Both veterans confirmed their Test retirements earlier this year, shortly before the squad for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England was announced. After a challenging run against New Zealand and Australia, the duo decided to step away from Test cricket.
Earlier this year, Rohit and Virat were instrumental in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 victory. They had also retired from T20Is following India’s 2024 World Cup campaign in Barbados.
