Rahul Dravid served as the head coach of the Rajasthan Royals during IPL 2025. Former South African star AB de Villiers recently commented on Dravid’s decision to step down, suggesting that it felt like a directive from the franchise’s owners and that it likely left Dravid disappointed.
In a surprising turn of events, Dravid resigned from his role as head coach ahead of IPL 2026. The Rajasthan Royals confirmed the news on their official social media handles, noting that they had offered him a higher role within the franchise, which he declined.
Following his resignation, reports emerged hinting at multiple factors behind Dravid’s decision. One key reason appeared to be the departure of Sanju Samson, with whom Dravid shared a strong rapport, and the management’s inaction regarding the matter reportedly left him disheartened.
AB de Villiers: Additionally, the franchise had plans to elevate Riyan Parag as a brand ambassador due to his massive fan following in Guwahati and were keen on grooming him as the team’s future captain. Dravid, however, disagreed with this approach, believing that Yashasvi Jaiswal, a consistent performer on the international stage, should have been prioritized for the leadership role.
“Rahul Leaves Big Footsteps and Big Shoes to Fill” – AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers expressed that the decision to part ways with Rahul Dravid seemed to be driven by the team’s management. He added that Dravid’s absence will leave a significant void and highlighted the pressures faced by coaches and mentors in professional leagues. Speaking on his YouTube channel, AB said:
“It sounds to me like it was an owner’s call, a management decision. They offered him a broader role within the team, which he declined. Perhaps he was disappointed but still wanted to contribute from the dugout. Rahul leaves big footsteps and big shoes to fill. He’s a larger-than-life personality and possesses immense knowledge about the game. I’ve personally spoken to several youngsters who say he’s had a huge influence on their careers.”
He further commented on the pressures in league management:
“Coaches and managers are always under pressure to deliver results and win trophies. When they don’t, owners start intervening. We don’t know all the details, but since he turned down the alternate role, maybe he was let go, which is never ideal. Perhaps Rajasthan have new plans for the upcoming season and want to shake things up.”
AB de Villiers also criticized RR’s recent auction strategy, particularly the decision to release Jos Buttler. He said:
“I didn’t think their last auction was the best. Letting go of key players like Jos Buttler and others seemed like a mistake. Rebuilding is fine, but it shouldn’t be too aggressive. One or two departures are manageable, but releasing a large chunk of the team at once can be risky. Gradual changes work better.”
AB de Villiers: After a disappointing IPL 2025, where RR finished in the bottom half of the table, the franchise will be eager to bounce back strongly in the next season.
