Why have Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell been left out of Australia’s ODI squad for the India series?

Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell last featured for Australia in an ODI during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

On Tuesday, October 7, the Australian Cricket Team announced their squads for the upcoming white-ball series against India, which includes three ODIs and five T20Is. One of the key talking points was the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, who has been ruled out as he recovers from a lumbar bone stress injury. In his place, Mitchell Marsh will lead the team.

Pacer Mitchell Starc, who last played an ODI in November 2024, returns for the series against India. Meanwhile, Mitchell Owen and Matthew Renshaw are expected to make their ODI debuts during the campaign.

Batter Marnus Labuschagne was dropped from the squad following a poor performance in Australia’s last ODI series against South Africa. Wicket-keeper Alex Carey has been named in the squad but will miss the first ODI in Perth to represent South Australia in the Sheffield Shield.

The announcement also surprised many fans as Australian legends Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell were left out of the squad.

Why Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell Are Missing from Australia’s ODI Squad for India Series

Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell will not feature in Australia’s upcoming ODI series against India because both players retired from ODI cricket earlier this year. Steve Smith ended his ODI career in March following the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 but will continue representing Australia in Test matches and T20Is.

Maxwell, meanwhile, announced his ODI retirement in June 2025 to concentrate on the shorter format. Additionally, he will miss the T20I series against India due to a wrist injury sustained before the New Zealand T20Is, for which he recently underwent surgery.

The ODI series between Australia and India kicks off on October 19 at Perth Stadium. The second and third ODIs are scheduled for October 23 and 25, respectively. Following that, both teams will face off in a five-match T20I series from October 29 to November 8.
