Sanju Samson’s placement at No.5 has sparked widespread discussion on social media. India’s coach Sitanshu Kotak has now revealed the reasoning behind the decision, clarifying the team’s approach and strategy.
Sanju Samson Retains Place Despite Wicketkeeper Speculation

Ahead of India’s Asia Cup 2025 match against the UAE, many expected Jitesh Sharma to replace Sanju Samson as the team’s wicketkeeper, especially after Shubman Gill returned as vice-captain and was slated to open alongside Abhishek Sharma. Jitesh’s impressive IPL form for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) further strengthened the speculation.
However, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav chose continuity, keeping Samson in the middle order despite concerns over his experience batting at No.5. Samson’s recent record as an opener, including three T20I centuries last year, influenced their decision.
Days before India’s Group A clash against Pakistan, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak defended Samson’s No.5 role, emphasizing trust in his ability. “Sanju hasn’t batted much at No.5 or 6, but it doesn’t mean he can’t. He is good enough to bat at any number. Whatever the team requires, the captain and head coach will decide. He is more than happy to bat anywhere,” Kotak said.
Samson has scored 62 runs for India at No.5, averaging 20.62, far below his opener record of 522 runs and three centuries.
Can Sanju play at No.3?

If Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as head coach is any indication, he values flexibility in the batting lineup. It wouldn’t be surprising if Sanju Samson is promoted to No.3 in the coming Asia Cup matches.
In India’s game against the UAE, Suryakumar Yadav batted at No.3 after Abhishek Sharma was dismissed for 30. The inclusion of Tilak Varma in the XI adds further intrigue to India’s middle-order strategy. India will next face Pakistan on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium, setting the stage for a highly anticipated clash.
