Sunil Gavaskar Advises Yashasvi Jaiswal to Keep Scoring Big Hundreds

Yashasvi Jaiswal

Over the course of his short career, 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a habit of scoring big hundreds. The left-handed batter was well on his way to a double century against the West Indies in the first innings of the second Test at Arun Jaitley Stadium. However, a mix-up with skipper Shubman Gill brought an early end to his innings, with Jaiswal walking back after scoring 175 off 258 balls, including 22 boundaries.

After Day 2, Jaiswal joined the host broadcaster for a chat, where former India captain Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t resist giving some advice. Broadcaster Harsha Bhogle first praised Jaiswal: “Well done. Absolutely enjoyed your batting. Don’t mind how it ended, but we love watching you bat.”

Gavaskar chimed in, encouraging the young batter to continue his prolific scoring: “I just want to add to that. Well done, keep it up. Keep getting the hundreds. Daddy hundreds, but because I am a grandfather, I’ll say keep getting granddaddy hundreds.” Caught off guard, Jaiswal could only respond silently, unable to say, “Thank you, sir.”

This innings marked the fifth time in Jaiswal’s Test career that he crossed 150 runs, placing him alongside Graeme Smith for the most hundreds before the age of 24. Had he reached a double century, it would have been his third in Tests, following two double hundreds in the 2024 home series against England.

India bossing the Delhi Test

At Stumps on Day 2, West Indies reached 140/4, still trailing India by 378 runs in the second Test. Earlier, India posted a commanding 518/5 in their first innings, thanks to centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill.

Gill remained unbeaten on 129 off 196 balls, striking 16 fours and two sixes. This marked his maiden home Test century as captain and his 10th overall in the longest format. Among the four West Indies wickets, Ravindra Jadeja claimed three, while Kuldeep Yadav took the remaining one.

India already lead the two-match series 1-0, having won the first Test in Ahmedabad.
