Shubman Gill recently led India to a 2-2 draw against England in the Test series. Despite being India’s Test captain and ODI vice-captain, his spot in the Men in Blue T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 is not guaranteed. The tournament, scheduled in the UAE from September 9-29, will follow the T20I format.
At 25, the Punjab batter has started to showcase his true potential on the international stage, delivering several standout performances. He is widely regarded as one of the premier hitters in world cricket and is considered a future superstar across all formats.
Shubman Gill was appointed India’s Test captain following Rohit Sharma’s retirement and is also expected to succeed him as ODI captain.
However, reports suggest that he may miss out on the T20I squad, as India’s T20I lineup is reportedly settled, leaving little room for changes.
Shubman Gill Faces Uncertainty in India’s T20I Lineup

In 21 T20 Internationals for India, Gill has accumulated 578 runs at an impressive strike rate of 139.27 and an average of 30.42. He holds the distinction of being the fastest Indian to reach 100 runs in all three formats and has already notched a T20I century for India.
However, according to a recent report from RevSportz, Shubman Gill might struggle to secure a spot in what is considered a “set team” under Gautam Gambhir. Players like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma have performed consistently, leaving little room for changes.
“Sources indicate that Sanju Samson has scored three hundreds in his last 10 T20Is, excelling as an opener. It would be unfair to push him down the order to accommodate Shubman Gill. Abhishek Sharma is currently the world’s top-ranked T20 batter, with Tilak Varma second. Under Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav, India has prioritized clarity and continuity. Even Gill himself emphasized continuity in England’s red-ball format, which is now shaping the team’s approach,” wrote veteran journalist Boria Majumdar.
Despite Shubman Gill stellar IPL performances, the report highlights that IPL success alone does not guarantee national selection, and including him at the expense of other performers could be unjust.
