Shubman Gill Ends Test Series with 754 Runs, Falls Short of Breaking Gavaskar’s 54-Year-Old Record

Shubman Gill emerged as the highest run-scorer in the England vs India Test series. The Indian captain displayed excellent batting form throughout the series but was unable to produce a big innings in the fifth Test at The Oval, London, scoring 21 and 11 runs in his two innings.

Finishing with 754 runs from 10 innings at an impressive average of 75.40, Gill led the series in runs scored. His performance included four centuries across five matches, highlighted by a double century (269) in the second Test at Edgbaston.

Gill also had a chance to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s longstanding record during The Oval Test. Gavaskar set the mark in 1971 against the West Indies by scoring 774 runs in a single Test series—the highest by any Indian batsman in a Test series to date—but Gill fell short of breaking this 54-year-old record.

Shubman Gill Sets New Records as Indian Skipper at The Oval Test

Shubman Gill surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s longstanding record for the most runs scored by an Indian captain in a Test series at The Oval. In the first innings, Gill eclipsed Gavaskar’s 732 runs, which was set during India’s 1978-79 Test series against the West Indies.

Gill also overtook Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record of 712 runs, the highest by an Indian batsman in a Test series against England, previously set during the 2024 home series.

On day three, during the second session, Gill was dismissed by Gus Atkinson. In India’s second innings, the team has reached 225 for four wickets, with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring a century and Akash Deep contributing a fifty.

Earlier, India were all out for 224 in their first innings, thanks to a solid half-century from Karun Nair (57). England responded with 247 all out, gaining a slender first-innings lead of 23 runs.
