Rohit Sharma’s Remarkable Comeback and Champions Trophy Triumph

Rohit Sharma has firmly established himself as one of the finest white-ball captains in Indian cricket history, but his journey to the top was far from smooth. After the heartbreak of the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Rohit spent months planning a comeback and led India to not one, but two ICC titles within a year.
The flamboyant opener was devastated when Australia crushed India’s 2023 ODI World Cup dream. However, he patiently rebuilt his form and led India from the front in the 2024 T20 World Cup, ending an 11-year wait for an ICC trophy. Following that monumental victory in Barbados, Rohit announced his retirement from T20 internationals to focus on the other formats.
He continued his winning momentum in the Champions Trophy this year, guiding India to another ICC title with an unbeaten run in Dubai. Unlike the 2024 T20 World Cup, he did not retire this time and has his eyes set on the 2027 ODI World Cup, a goal he has often spoken about.
On Independence Day, Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant reminisced about the Champions Trophy win, sharing a celebratory Instagram reel. The clip captures Pant teasing Shubman Gill and enjoying playful moments with Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and others. Batting great Virat Kohli also appears, with Pant jokingly splashing champagne on him. When Gill asks Pant about the video, he humorously responds, “Abbe yeh toh record krr rha hai,” capturing the team’s joyous spirit after their big triumph.
At the end of the celebratory video, Rishabh Pant shifted the focus to Rohit Sharma, who was seen holding a stump in his hands. Addressing the ongoing retirement rumors, Rohit made it clear that he has no plans to step away from the game anytime soon.
“Retirement lelu? Har baar jeetega toh mai thodi retirement leta rahunga.” [Retirement? I’m not going to retire every time I win],” Rohit said in the clip. Pant humorously responded, “Maine nahi bola bhai, hum toh chaha rahe hai khelo,” [I didn’t say that, bro. We actually want you to play], highlighting the playful camaraderie between the teammates.
Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli to take decision on ODI future after AUS series: Report
Meanwhile, a report in Dainik Jagran has suggested that Rohit Sharma’s ODI career could be approaching its conclusion. With the August Bangladesh series canceled, India’s next 50-over assignment is an away series against Australia from October 19 to 25. The report also speculated that both Rohit and Virat Kohli might retire from ODIs following that tour. However, Rohit’s recent return to training indicates he has no immediate plans to step away from the format.
