ENG vs IND: "I’ll cherish it for life…" Shubman Gill calls the Edgbaston Test victory his happiest moment.

Shubman Gill scored 430 runs and secured his first Test win as captain at Edgbaston. India’s captain Shubman Gill was ecstatic as his team defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test of the five-match series, leveling the series 1-1. This marked the first-ever Test victory by India—or any Asian team—at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

In only his second Test as captain, Shubman Gill led India to a memorable triumph and said this win would remain one of his “happiest memories” whenever he eventually retires from the game.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, India posted 587 runs, powered by Shubman Gill’s 269 and half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravindra Jadeja. England responded with 407 runs, boosted by a 303-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Harry Brook (158) and Jamie Smith (184). On the bowling front, Mohammed Siraj took 6/70 while Akash Deep claimed 4 wickets.

In their second innings, India declared at 427/6, with Shubman Gill contributing 161 runs. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja also added valuable fifties. Chasing a target of 608, England collapsed for 271, with Jamie Smith top-scoring at 88. Akash Deep was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 6/99 and a match tally of 10/187.

“Something I will cherish for the rest of my life” – Shubman Gill on India’s Edgbaston Test Victory

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill was named Player of the Match for his remarkable twin centuries and a record-breaking 430 runs in the Test — the highest by any Indian batsman in a Test match. Gill praised the team’s all-around effort that led to a strong comeback and marked India’s first-ever Test win against the hosts at Edgbaston. His leadership began after India lost the series opener at Headingley, Leeds.

“This is something I will cherish for the rest of my life. Whenever I retire, I believe this will remain one of my happiest memories. I was meant to take the final catch of the match, and I feel very content and proud of how we managed to finish the game,” Gill told the BCCI. “There are three more crucial matches ahead, and the quick turnaround after this one is good because the momentum is now with us.”

Gill also emphasized how the players took ownership of their performances.

“The way everyone contributed — with both ball and bat — is a huge positive. When different players step up and perform at various stages, that’s exactly what you want. That’s what builds a champion team, and these are promising signs for us,” he added.

In his dressing room speech, the Indian captain applauded his teammates.

“We have worked incredibly hard to reach this position. Over the last six to eight months, I understood how tough it is to win a Test, especially here, where India had never won before. I’m extremely proud of everyone. On day one, we said it would take the effort of each and every one of us to secure this Test win, especially in this country, and everyone delivered,” Gill concluded.
