England captain Ben Stokes was visibly upset after India’s opener Yashasvi Jaiswal chose to take a review following his leg-before wicket dismissal off Josh Tongue in the second innings of the Edgbaston Test on Day 3. The on-field umpire, Sharfuddoula, had given Jaiswal out, prompting the left-hander to consult with KL Rahul on whether to challenge the decision.

The review timer had already run past 15 seconds and reached zero when Yashasvi Jaiswal finally decided to send the call upstairs. Stokes was unhappy with the on-field officials for accepting the review despite the timer expiring, leading to a lengthy discussion between him, the umpires, and Rahul, who tried to ease the tension.

Although the crowd expressed their displeasure with boos, the review was upheld. Replays showed three reds, confirming Yashasvi Jaiswal dismissal after he had scored 28 runs off 22 balls.

The incident occurred on the fourth ball of the eighth over. Prior to that, Tongue had been hit for a four on the second delivery but adjusted his length effectively to trap Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Bowling from around the wicket, Josh Tongue angled the ball in, which nipped back from a fullish length, beating Jaiswal as he attempted a big, booming drive. The ball struck the front pad, and replays confirmed it was clipping the top of the leg stump.

Earlier, India secured a 180-run lead after Mohammed Siraj’s six-wicket haul helped bowl England out for 407.

Siraj the main striker with the ball

Harry Brook and Jamie Smith staged a remarkable fightback for England, putting on 303 runs for the sixth wicket to help their team avoid the follow-on and post a total of 407. Despite six England batters falling for ducks, the hosts crossed the 400-run mark. Jamie Smith remained unbeaten on 184, setting the highest score by an England wicketkeeper-batter.

The second new ball proved crucial for India as Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep wrapped up England’s innings swiftly in the final session of Day 3, with Siraj taking six wickets and Akash Deep claiming four.

India closed Day 3 at 64/1 in their second innings, with KL Rahul unbeaten on 28 and Karun Nair on 7, extending their lead to 244 runs.
