One Year After the T20 World Cup Triumph: India’s Team Celebrates

T20 World Cup

One year after the historic victory in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados, India has been reliving that unforgettable night and celebrating worldwide after ending a long and painful trophy drought. When Suryakumar Yadav completed that iconic catch on the long-off boundary, securing India’s ICC trophy once again, a generation of cricketers finally breathed easy, having won silverware. One year later, on June 29, 2025, key members of that winning team reunited in Birmingham, cutting two cakes to commemorate the moment.

In a video shared by the BCCI on social media, select members of India’s touring party in England are seen gathered in a restaurant in Birmingham as they prepare for the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston. Before the serious cricket begins on July 2, this was a heartfelt moment for key players to look back on where they were a year ago and celebrate the milestone together.

The Indian team celebrated the moment with two cakes—one labeled ‘Team India’ and the other ‘Champions T20 WC 2024.’ No player seemed eager to take the lead in cutting the cake, as Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj playfully encouraged each other to step forward.

Paaji, kaato na…’

Ultimately, it was Jasprit Bumrah who stepped up and took the responsibility—just as he did a year ago, bowling two crucial overs that turned the game around when South Africa was firmly in control, needing a run-a-ball from the last five overs to win. Bumrah cut one cake, while Mohammed Siraj took charge of the other, encouraged by their younger teammate Arshdeep Singh who playfully urged, “Paaji, kaato na (cut it, no).”

Rishabh Pant also teased Ravindra Jadeja by reminding him that they were celebrating the one-year anniversary of his retirement from the T20 format. After the final victory, Jadeja had joined Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in stepping away from the shortest format. However, Jadeja was quick to respond, reminding the younger players that he was still active in the other two formats.

The players then shared bites of the cake with each other in a heartfelt moment that perfectly captured the significance of this period: after years of coming close but falling short, this Indian team finally shook off the burden by lifting the trophy. Whether this emotional team moment can serve as the foundation for India’s comeback after the opening loss in the England series remains to be seen.
