Rishabh Pant was handed a ₹30 lakh fine for a slow over rate, with the amount increased due to it being his third offence this season.

Rishabh Pant’s Bittersweet IPL 2025 Finale: Brilliant Knock Overshadowed by Over-Rate Fine

Rishabh Pant

Rishabh Pant ended IPL 2025 on a bittersweet note. The sweet part came with a spectacular innings of 118* off 61 balls, powering Lucknow Super Giants to a formidable 227/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, despite his heroics, LSG fell short as RCB successfully chased down the target in 18.4 overs with six wickets in hand.

The bitterness came from the BCCI’s disciplinary action against Pant for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct by maintaining a slow over rate. He was fined ₹30 lakh—a heavier penalty than the usual ₹12 lakh for captains—because it was LSG’s third slow over-rate offense of the season.

The BCCI released a statement confirming the fine:
“Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 70 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Tuesday.”

“As it was his team’s third offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 30 Lakh.”

Additionally, all other LSG players, including the Impact Player, faced fines of either INR 12 Lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever was less.

Rishabh Pant’s century goes in vain as RCB win

Royal Challengers Bengaluru made IPL history by becoming the first team to win all their away matches in a single season, cruising to 230/4 in a high-octane chase against Lucknow Super Giants. The victory ensured they avoided the eliminator and instead advanced to Qualifier 1, where they’ll face table-toppers Punjab Kings on Thursday.

Lucknow had earlier posted an imposing 227/3, thanks to a sensational unbeaten 118 off 61 balls from skipper Rishabh Pant—his first major knock of the season. Pant, promoted to No. 3 after Matthew Breetzke was bowled by Nuwan Thushara, was in full flow, smashing 11 fours and 8 sixes. He shared a blistering 152-run stand off 78 balls with Mitchell Marsh, who continued his stellar season with a 67 off 31 balls.

But RCB responded in style. Virat Kohli set the tone with a composed 54, while Jitesh Sharma sealed the chase with an explosive 85* off 33 balls, wrapping up the win in just 18.4 overs.

The playoff picture now sees Gujarat Titans slipping to No. 3, setting up an eliminator clash with Mumbai Indians on Friday. The loser of Qualifier 1 between RCB and Punjab will get a second shot at reaching the final in Ahmedabad next Tuesday by playing the winner of the eliminator on Sunday.
