Former India opener Virender Sehwag offered valuable advice to Abhishek after his stellar innings guided the Indian cricket team to victory over Pakistan in the Super Four clash of the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday, September 21. Virender Sehwag encouraged Abhishek to turn his big scores into centuries whenever he reaches the 70s or 80s.
The left-handed batsman stole the spotlight with his aggressive display, scoring 74 runs off just 39 balls, including five sixes and six boundaries. Partnering with Shubman Gill (47) for an opening stand of 105, Abhishek laid a solid foundation for India while chasing 172.
Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the Indian openers, who dominated the first ten overs at a scorching run rate of over 10. Abhishek was rightly named Player of the Match for his match-winning innings as India defeated Pakistan by six wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Virender Sehwag Offers Priceless Advice to Abhishek Sharma

During an interaction with Abhishek Sharma on Sony Sports, former cricketer-turned-commentator Virender Sehwag shared invaluable guidance on capitalizing on good starts. He urged Abhishek to make it a habit of converting scores beyond 70 into centuries, advice Virender Sehwag himself had received from legendary Sunil Gavaskar.
“Many congratulations! I would say, whenever you reach seventy, don’t miss the chance to turn it into a hundred. Sunil Gavaskar once told me this: when you retire, you’ll remember those innings where you got out on 70 or 80,” Virender Sehwag said.

Abhishek’s recent half-century against Pakistan has propelled him to the top of the run-scorers’ chart in Asia Cup 2025, amassing 173 runs in four matches. Led by Suryakumar Yadav, the Men in Blue now sit atop the Super Four standings with two points and a superior Net Run Rate. India will next face Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 24. With four straight wins, they remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
Sehwag added a personal reflection: “If only I had converted more of those innings, I might have ended up with many more centuries. These opportunities don’t come often. When you’re batting well, on a day that it’s your day, try to finish unbeaten – that’s always better. Keep that in mind.”
