IPL 2025: What Delhi Capitals Need to Do to Qualify for the Playoffs

Delhi Capitals currently have 13 points from 12 matches, with 6 wins and a net run rate (NRR) of +0.260. The Delhi Capitals (DC) started their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season strongly, winning four out of their first five games and losing only one. However, their form dipped in the latter half of the tournament. In the next seven matches, DC managed just two wins, suffered four losses, and had one match with no result.

As a result, Delhi Capitals now have 13 points from 12 games, with six wins and five losses. Their most recent defeat came against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at their home ground, Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, on May 18.

In that match, Delhi Capitals was led by KL Rahul, who scored an outstanding 112 not out off 65 balls, hitting four sixes and fourteen fours. This was his fifth IPL century and made him the first player to score hundreds for three different IPL teams. Tristan Stubbs contributed 21 not out from 10 balls, while Abishek Porel (30) and Axar Patel (25) helped Delhi Capitals set a total of 199/3 in 20 overs.

Chasing the target, Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill dominated the DC bowling attack, hitting shots all around Arun Jaitley Stadium. Gill scored 93 not out with three fours and seven sixes, while Sudharsan made an unbeaten 108, including twelve fours and four sixes, marking his second IPL century. The Gujarat Titans won by 10 wickets and secured their place in the playoffs.

How Can Delhi Capitals Qualify for the Playoffs?

Delhi Capitals

Once considered the favorites to be the first team to secure a playoff spot, Delhi Capitals (DC) now face a challenging situation ahead of their last two league matches. After dominating the IPL points table for most of the season, DC currently sit in fifth place following a heavy 10-wicket loss.

Adding to their worries, their Net Run Rate (NRR) has dropped significantly to +0.260, while the Mumbai Indians boast a much higher NRR of +1.156.

Delhi Capitals upcoming fixtures are against the Mumbai Indians on May 21 and the Punjab Kings on May 24. If DC win both matches, they will advance to the IPL 2025 playoffs regardless of their NRR.

If DC win both games, they will finish with 17 points and qualify for the playoffs. However, if they lose to Mumbai Indians on May 21, they will be eliminated. A loss to MI would leave DC with 13 points and only one game remaining. Even if they win their final match against Punjab Kings, their maximum points tally would be 15, which would still be less than MI’s 16 points, resulting in DC missing out on the playoff
