ICC Suspends USA Cricket Membership Ahead of 2028 Olympics
Los Angeles is set to host the 2028 Olympics, with cricket making its debut at the Games. However, the International Cricket Council on Tuesday confirmed the immediate suspension of USA Cricket’s ICC membership. This decision followed a year-long review and extensive engagement with key stakeholders.
The International Cricket Council cited repeated breaches of obligations under its constitution, noting that USA Cricket failed to establish a functional governance structure and made insufficient progress toward achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC). The body’s actions were also said to have caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and globally.
“The suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game. The ICC’s priority remains ensuring athletes and the sport are not affected,” the ICC stated. The suspension will not impact the USA national teams, which can continue participating in ICC events, including preparations for the LA 2028 Olympics.
Control of national teams
Following the suspension of USA Cricket, the International Cricket Council and its designated representatives will temporarily manage the administration of USA national teams. This ensures continued support for players and maintains momentum toward Olympic inclusion.
The International Cricket Council Normalisation Committee, supported by ICC management, will outline the steps required to lift the suspension. These include specific, demonstrable changes to USA Cricket’s governance, operations, and status within the cricket ecosystem. The committee will also monitor progress and provide consultative support.
