Asia Cup 2025: Kapil Dev Reacts to India-Pakistan Handshake Controversy, Says “It’s a Personal Choice”

Asia Cup: Kapil Dev, addressing the recent handshake controversy, described it as a minor issue. The former Indian captain urged the Pakistan Cricket Team to concentrate on improving their on-field performances rather than getting caught up in incidents like the handshake episode during the Asia Cup 2025 clash against India.

The 1983 World Cup-winning skipper stressed that debates over such gestures only divert attention from the cricket itself and contribute little to the progress of the game.

The controversy arose after Indian players refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts both before and after the Asia Cup 2025 match in Dubai on Sunday, September 14. Following this, Pakistan lodged a formal protest with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Asia Cup: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had also called for the removal of match referee Andy Pycroft after he instructed Pakistan captain Salman Agha not to shake hands with Suryakumar Yadav. Later, after India secured a 7-wicket victory, the Indian team again did not come out to shake hands and reportedly closed the dressing room doors on the visiting Pakistani players.

Asia Cup 2025: Kapil Dev Reacts to India-Pakistan Handshake Controversy, Says “It’s a Personal Choice”

Kapil Dev, India’s 1983 World Cup-winning captain, dismissed the recent controversy surrounding handshakes in the Asia Cup as overblown.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had expressed displeasure after Suryakumar Yadav paid tribute to the Pahalgam terror attack victims and dedicated India’s win to the armed forces for Operation Sindoor.

Speaking to ANI, Kapil Dev said such situations are often exaggerated, and players should stay focused on the game.

“These are all minor issues. The focus should always be on playing cricket. If someone chooses not to shake hands, there’s no need to make a big deal out of it. While giving incorrect statements isn’t right, sometimes cricketers make comments that stir controversy. Pakistan didn’t play well and need to improve. Shaking hands or hugging is a personal choice,” he said.
