Rohit Sharma last appeared in an ODI in March 2025. Despite not playing any competitive cricket since IPL 2025, the India captain has climbed to the second spot in the ICC ODI rankings, as per the updated list released on August 13, 2025.
Rohit Sharma most recent outing for India was in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Under his leadership, India defeated New Zealand in the final in Dubai, securing their second ICC trophy in six months. This marked India’s second ICC Champions Trophy win after 2013, following their T20 World Cup triumph in June 2024.
Meanwhile, Babar Azam dropped to third place after a series of low scores during Pakistan’s ODI tour of the West Indies, coinciding with Rohit’s rise.
Shubman Gill continues to hold the top spot in the rankings, just ahead of Rohit. Currently, Rohit Sharma has 756 rating points—five more than Babar, who has 751, but 28 points behind Gill.
Virat Kohli Holds Fourth Spot; Five Indians Feature in Top 15 Rankings

Rohit Sharma and Kohli last represented India in March during the ICC Champions Trophy. After retiring from T20Is last year, the two seasoned batters surprised fans by announcing their Test retirements within a week in May, right in the middle of IPL 2025.

The rise in the rankings comes as the BCCI clarified that it is in no hurry to finalize decisions about Rohit Sharma and Kohli’s futures, following reports suggesting that both players might retire after India’s October tour of Australia.
With the Bangladesh series postponed from this August to next year, Rohit Sharma and Kohli’s next assignment will be the Australia tour in October, featuring three ODIs and five T20Is.
