Andre Russell to Retire from International Cricket After First Two T20Is Against Australia. West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has announced that he will retire from international cricket following the first two T20Is against Australia.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Russell named his match-winning performance against India in the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2016 as the highlight of his international journey. In that high-stakes match, Russell smashed an unbeaten 43 off just 20 balls, playing a crucial role in West Indies’ successful chase of a challenging 193-run target.
Teaming up with Lendl Simmons, who scored a brilliant 82* off 51 balls, Russell helped steer the team to a memorable seven-wicket victory. West Indies went on to defeat England in the final, chasing down 156 to clinch their second ICC T20 World Cup title in men’s cricket.
Russell’s explosive batting and all-round contributions have made him a key figure in West Indies’ white-ball success over the years.
Andre Russell Recalls the Highlight of His Career

In a recent interview with Cricket West Indies (CWI), Andre Russell reflected on the standout moment of his international career, naming the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final against India as his most memorable performance.
“Without a doubt, the 2016 World Cup semi-final against India was the best moment of my international career,” Russell said. “I helped take the team home alongside Lendl Simmons, and we had a solid foundation laid by the other batters as well.”
Russell highlighted the pressure of chasing a daunting target of over 190 in front of a passionate Indian crowd. “Chasing 190-plus in a semi-final in India, with the entire stadium backing the home side, brought a lot of pressure. But the pitch was excellent for batting, and the confidence we had in the dressing room, along with the depth in our lineup, gave me the freedom to play my natural game,” he added.
As Russell prepares to bow out from international cricket, he will feature in the first two T20Is against Australia, scheduled for July 20 and 22 at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica. The five-match series will continue without him, as Matthew Forde is set to replace Russell for the final three games.
