Joe Root and Steve Smith have each scored 11 Test centuries against India. In the ongoing third Test of the five-match series at Lord’s, England’s Joe Root reached a century on day two of the first innings. This milestone helped Root achieve an impressive record against India.
With this century, Joe Root matched Australian batsman Steve Smith’s record for the most Test hundreds against India. Both players have now scored 11 centuries against the Indian team. Root reached this landmark in just his 60th innings against India.
Following them on the list are former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, former West Indies skipper Vivian Richards, and West Indies legend Garry Sobers, each with eight Test centuries against India.
Joe Root Reaches 3000 Test Runs Against India
With his century in the Lord’s Test, Joe Root has become the first batsman to surpass 3000 runs against India in Test cricket. He has amassed 3,059 runs against India across 33 Tests, boasting an impressive average of 57.71, along with 12 half-centuries.
Joe Root now has 37 Test centuries in total, ranking him fifth among all batsmen in the format’s history. This milestone sees him surpass legends Rahul Dravid and Steve Smith, who each have 36 Test hundreds.
Importantly, this is Root’s first century of the current Test series. It marks a strong comeback at Lord’s after a disappointing performance in the previous match at Edgbaston, where he was dismissed for 22 and 6 in the two innings.
Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bat first. On day one, Nitish Reddy struck early, taking the first two wickets by dismissing openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett.
In the opening session of day two, Jasprit Bumrah made a significant impact by taking key wickets, including Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Chris Woakes. England has now surpassed 300 runs for the loss of seven wickets. The five-match Test series currently stands level at 1-1.
