2011 – Lost by 43 runs vs RCB
In IPL 2011, Mumbai Indians (MI) edged past Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Eliminator with a four-wicket victory. However, their campaign ended in Qualifier 2, where they were outclassed by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Batting first, RCB rode on Chris Gayle’s explosive 89 to post a formidable 185/4. In response, MI stumbled to 142/8 despite a steady 40-run knock from Sachin Tendulkar. The rest of the batting lineup faltered under pressure as Daniel Vettori claimed three wickets, while Sreenath Aravind and JS Mohammad grabbed two each, sealing a 43-run win for RCB.
2013 – Won by four wickets vs RR
After a heavy 48-run loss to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Qualifier 1, Mumbai Indians (MI) regrouped to face Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2013 — and came out on top with a four-wicket win.
RR posted 165/6, with Rahul Dravid contributing a steady 43. MI’s chase was anchored by Dwayne Smith, who smashed a fluent 60, while Aditya Tare added a vital 35 at the top. The victory set up a rematch with CSK in the final, where MI triumphed to clinch their maiden IPL title.
2017 – Won by six wickets vs KKR
Karn Sharma starred with four wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah claimed three to break KKR’s backbone. Chasing the modest target, Krunal Pandya anchored the innings with an unbeaten 45, guiding MI to a six-wicket win in just 14.3 overs. They went on to beat RPS in a thriller final, sealing their third IPL crown.
2023 – Lost by 62 runs vs GT
Gill’s breathtaking 129 powered Gujarat Titans to a mammoth 233/3. In reply, MI’s chase was anchored briefly by Suryakumar Yadav (61) and Tilak Varma (43), but the innings unraveled quickly. Mohit Sharma’s sensational five-wicket haul sealed MI’s fate, bundling them out for 171 and handing GT a 62-run win to storm into the final.
